Support choice and growing independence

When words feel difficult, children can point to a card. During a busy day, they can use one as a reminder of a tool they have practised.

Keep the cards accessible in a classroom calm space, pastoral setting or at home. They can support shared practice with an adult as well as increasingly independent use.

There is no single right way to reset. Different moments call for different support, and children do not have to manage every feeling alone.

Eight tools to explore

• Breathe – follow a slow breathing rhythm.
• Bilateral Tapping – gently tap alternate sides while breathing steadily.
• 3–2–1 Ground – notice three things you can see, two you can hear and one you can feel.
• Press + Release – press your palms together, then slowly release.
• Change the Energy – choose walking, stretching or shaking.
• Less Input – explore quieter surroundings, dimmer lighting or fewer words.
• Pause – take a moment, choose what helps and return when ready.
• Get Support – find someone, say what you need and stay near.

Start with a settled moment

Introduce the cards when things feel settled and practise together. Give children time to explore the tools and discover their preferences, then keep the cards within easy reach for everyday use.

The aim is to offer choices and support, not to expect every tool to suit every child or every moment.
