Lesson 5 - Thinking and Understanding with Olivia Owl

Lesson 5: Thinking and Understanding with Olivia Owl

💛 Introduction

This gentle lesson introduces children to Olivia Owl, who helps us think, reflect, and make sense of our feelings.

Children learn that their thoughts can help them understand what is happening inside them and around them.

This is not about changing thoughts.

It is about noticing them, understanding them, and feeling safe to explore them.

🎯 Learning Focus

  • Children begin to notice their thoughts

  • Children understand that thoughts help make sense of feelings

  • Children learn that thoughts can change

  • Children feel safe to express and explore ideas

🌿 What You’ll Need

  • Olivia Owl character card (optional)

  • Calm, comfortable space for discussion

  • Optional feeling or scenario cards

🧠 Lesson Overview

Begin by introducing Olivia Owl as the character who helps us think and understand.

Explain that:

  • Our mind helps us think and make sense of things

  • Sometimes our thoughts feel busy or quiet

  • Thoughts can help us understand our feelings

  • Thoughts can change, just like feelings

Let children know that all thoughts are welcome, and there are no right or wrong answers.

🦉 Activity - Thinking Together

Gather children together and invite them to gently notice their thoughts.

Use simple language such as:

"Sometimes our mind is busy thinking, and sometimes it is calm and quiet."

Invite children to:

  • Share something they are thinking about (if they wish)

  • Listen to others’ ideas

  • Explore simple scenarios or questions

You can model examples:

"I am thinking about what we are doing next, and that helps me feel ready."

You can also introduce light discussion prompts such as:

"What might you think if you feel worried?"

"What could help your mind feel calm?"

💬 Reflection

Ask gentle questions such as:

  • What are you thinking about right now?

  • Do your thoughts ever change?

  • What helps your mind feel calm or clear?

Reassure children that all thoughts are okay, and we can take our time to understand them.

🌈 Bringing It Into the Day

You can revisit thinking and reflection throughout the day by asking:

  • "What is your mind thinking right now?"

  • "Can we think of something that might help?"

This helps children begin to connect their thoughts, feelings, and actions.

🌿 Gentle Reminder

This is not about correcting children’s thoughts.

It is about helping them feel safe to think, reflect and understand themselves in their own way.
